General Surgery

General surgery is a medical discipline that involves performing various types of surgical procedures to treat a broad range of health problems and diseases. In general surgery, there are different procedures that each focus on a specified part of the body or a particular organ.

General surgeons perform operations that involve different parts of the anatomy such as the abdomen, organs related to the abdomen as well as the endocrine system.

As a General Surgeon, Dr Viljoen has extensive knowledge and understanding of the anatomy of the human body, physiology and pathology.

During an appointment with Dr Viljoen, he will conduct a thorough physical examination of the patient. Dr Viljoen also uses a test called an endoscopy to help detect any abnormalities; such as infections, as well as precancerous and cancerous growths. The diagnosis will tell you whether or not surgery is required, as well as indicate the severity of the condition; which could assist in deciding on the treatment plan.

Some general surgical procedures in general surgery include:

Appendectomy:

An appendectomy is a surgical procedure in which the appendix is removed. It is predominantly performed as an emergency surgery to treat appendicitis. Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix

Biopsy:

A biopsy is a type of medical test that involves the removal of sample tissue which gets taken to a lab for examination. Examination of the tissue is generally done under a microscope but can alternatively undergo chemical analysis. A biopsy is used to detect the presence of pathogens or the severity of a disease or infection.

Breast Surgery:

There are many different types of breast surgery that are required for various reasons. An example would be the treatment of breast cancer. You could opt for a mastectomy or a lumpectomy. A mastectomy involves a partial or complete removal of one or both breasts. Whereas, a lumpectomy is a procedure whereby a distinct section of the breast is surgically removed for the treatment of malignant growths as well as breast cancer.

Thyroidectomy:

Thyroidectomy refers to the partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland. Thyroidectomies are performed to treat thyroid cancer as well as other conditions related to the thyroid such as hyperthyroidism and goiter.
